The find is in the Lebedinoye ore field, well known for its gold production. It came during a three year search for new gold bearing rocks conducted by  regional geological company Yakutskgeologia backed by federal money.

The area was seen as 'underexplored' but now the new find, announced by First Deputy Chairman of the Republican State Geological Committee Vitaly Kalashnikov, has been described as 'very promising'.

The potential new gold field will now be assessed by the Russian State Subsoil Agency (Rosnedra).

The body's Yakutsk office Yakutnedra will hold a tender for the assessment activities.

Assessment of the reserves is expected to take three years after which a tender will be held for the license to exploit the reserves.

Gold output in Sakha is on the increase, showing a 9.6% rise in 2012.
