Exclusive rights to the sea and its treasure trove will be gained by Russia if a United Nation's sub-committee's resolution is approved.
'The area of 52,000 sq km is a true 'Ali Baba's Cave' of natural resources, that would give Russia great opportunities and perspectives for the Russian economy,' said Sergey Donskoy, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment.
An earlier attempt by Russia to claim the sea - rich in hydrocarbons and minerals - failed in 2001.
Russia will gain exclusive rights to use its subsoil and seabed resources, including crab and ostraceans, in a sea off the Far East between the mainland and Sakhalin Island and the Kamchatka peninsula. The claim is based on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea that allows to expand the 200-mile state economic zone, if the area in question is a natural extension of the continental edge.
