The Russian government has targeted US and EU food imports with an embargo in a tit-for-tat move for sanctions imposed over the Ukraine crisis.

With US and European meat disappearing from supermarkets in Russia, there is an opportunity for domestic producers to fill gaps in the market.

Schools and hospitals in Chukota which nudges Alaska in the east of the country are to be supplied from local reindeer herds to replace American imports.

TV news reports in Russia have promoted reindeer delicacies from producers in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

'sReindeer meat is ecologically clean, and that is why neither French foie gras, nor Spanish jambon nor any other foreign delicacies can compare with it', said a Vesti news report on Russian television.

The region is an exporter of venison to the European Union, with 500 tons of meat sent to Germany, Finland and Sweden this year but now supplies will also go to TV report trumpeting  the benefits of home-grown produce. Estimates say some 70,000 reindeer will be slaughtered this year for venison.

Now supplies will go to central Russia as the Russian government encourages producers to fill the gaps in the market left by banned imports.

Unfortunately I do not think the infrastructure is in place for such a shift. There is also another problem. In Europe, reindeer meat is a delicacy and the price per kilo is therefore relatively high. Should reindeer meat be sold in the local market in Russia as everyday diet the price will be very low.

Never ever tasted Reindeer or any type on venison;however, my experiences are is that there are reasons why these meats have never been popular.
First, it just isn't a required taste with the human population, otherwise it would've been a preferred choice than beef ,chicken lamb ,pork well before this time.
Example rabbits, pheasants, kangaroo, emu ,camel etc all which have been in abundance for eons are still today rarely eaten by the populace. I've eaten kilos of duck, rabbits, kangaroo, emu ,even lizards and snakes BUT you just can't beat a salty crackling pork, a roast lamb dinner and a huge beef steak.
So I wish you luck with your project ,because I want Siberia and its people to prosper,
Hint: Try raising a breed of siberian cattle, a breed of siberian fat lamb and a breed of siberian pig , so that all contain that rich marble fat which can only be created by the lush summer pastures of the stepppes and its hibernating cold winters.
Siberia a future region for tremendous prosperity ,a region of indescribable beauty. a region for all those who DARE .
