The agreement came during Prayut Chan-o-cha's visit to Russia.

A working group from both countries will discuss details of the barter deal, said Thai foreign minister Don Pramudwinai.

Russia also promised to support Thailand's bid to become a new member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), which should ensure closer economic ties.

Thailand has a goal of boosting trade volume with Russia by five times in as many years, with the Russian Far East seen as an expected beneficiary of the new surge.

'We want Russia to help our country in the development of innovative technologies, so that our products become competitive,' said Prayut.

'Technology is also a kind of investment.'
