Phuket has been popular with Russian tourists for a long time.

Numbers flying direct to Phuket fell in and after 2014 with the fall in the rouble.

But now there is a definite rising trend with 257,311 direct arrivals to the Thai island from Russia in the first four months of 2018.

This amounts to a 24% rise year on year.

This was second only to China, which is Thailand’s largest source of tourists.

A further rise in numbers is expected in the rest of this 2018 with a year on year rise of up to 7 per cent.

Phuket Hotels Association president Anthony Lark said the rise in Russian numbers was a ‘remarkable recovery story’, according to the Phuket Gazette.

And he vowed that Phuket will get better.

‘By year end of 2017, there will be 16 new hotels coming to the Phuket market,’ he said.

‘Looking forward in 2018, six new hotels are forecast to open.’

He added: ‘The hotel industry is always innovating to stay up to date with technology, and many of the member hotels are undergoing major upgrades and renovations to ensure they are relevant, in addition to educating their staff in many fields, so that they can surprise and delight travellers.’

The hotel is committed to beach clean-ups, he said.
