The award for Leonardo DiCaprio was made for the US star by hundreds of fans from the Sakha Republic, who offered their gold and silver jewellery to be melted to make the award.

Arrangements have been made for Mr Doronin, 53, founder and chairman of Moscow-based Capital Group and a close friend of the actor, to hand over the award. The head of Karo film company, Oleg Andreyev brokered the arrangement and promised the unique people's award would reach 'our friend and comrade Leonardo'.

The Yakutians behind the award flew the 'Siberian Oscar' to Moscow - creator Tatyana Yegorova, entrepreneur Sarel Tikhonov, along with Zhanna Skryabina and Anna Ivanova.

The statuette is put in a wooden chest looking like a miniature copy of a Yakutian summer house with horse tail on top. When it was first announced, the Siberian prize was reported around the world.

Art director Stanislav Stepanov said: 'The figurine itself weighs 1.5 kg. Below we added a brass stand, so its total weight is 3.2 kg. It is only two centimetres smaller than the original Oscar.'

Jeweller Alexander Manzhuryev said: 'This figurine is kind of acknowledgment from people who live far away in the far north.'

Tatyana Egorova said the star had 'made the world a little bit better and happier' with his many roles.

'We do not pursue promotional aims nor proclaim any ideas nor pretend to be special. We are far from politics. We believe art has no boundaries, and only in art, the desire for beauty, are people able to understand each other, even when speaking in different languages.'

Russia does do those sweet things. The teardrop memorial sent to America after 9/11 is just beautiful and it's home is in New Jersey USA. Why there I do not know. It should be in New York.

if DiCaprio would have some class and style he would COME TO SIBERIA and collect his Oscar. Maybe not in a week or two. takes a long time to get a visa.... but his fans have handed over personal gold and silver to be melted down. does he understand that? or does he care? does he even know where Yakutia is? and that he has fans there who care very much about him? in my opinion he is a louse for not doing it.....

"If Mohamed will not come to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohamed"! Knowing Leo, who refers to himself as half-Russian, I am sure he will come up with a positive and appropriate response. It is a good thing that it would be a close Russian friend of his who will deliver and convey the Siberian Oscar to him.
