Floods break the banks of the River Ob, with 10 metre rise in water level

State of emergency declared in city of Nizhnevartovsk, which suffers worst flooding in its history.

The flooding was over the 'critical level' by 40cm, and 70 people had to be evacuated, reported the  Office of Civil Defence and Emergency Situations.

Nine families were given emergency accommodation in a temporary centre at primary school number 24 in the city. 

Strong wind and waves on the Ob also led to several villages being cut off, notably Lokosovo. 

The community was cut off by land, and waves on the river - the seventh longest in the world - prevented boats reaching stranded people.

Spring has been wet too, adding to the water in the river. 

Nizhnevartovsk is the second largest city in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous region.

It is time to restore the 8 km. Ob-Yenisei Canal.


With the increasing Russian Eastern and Artic"shift" it is an opportunity to restore the Ob-Yenisei Canal.
