An official from the park - on vacation - was on hand to rescue the roe deer, literally sliding the scared animal off the ice. Picture: Land of Leopard

The frightened and exhausted creature was spotted on the ice in the Land of the Leopard National Park in the Russian Far East. It's not the first time: park rangers say the deer are drawn onto the frozen lakes but then find their hooves slip and they collapse on the ice.

On a number of occasions dead deer have been found on such frozen lakes. This time an official from the park - on vacation - was on hand to rescue the roe deer, literally sliding the scared animal off the ice.

The park official calmed the animal before sliding it further to the edge of the lake. Pictures: Land of Leopard

Each time it tried to get up and run away, its legs caved in, and the deer fell down like a cartoon character. The park official calmed the animal before sliding it further to the edge of the lake.

Eventually safely back at the shore the animal bolted for the safety of the undergrowth without a backward glance. Which still leaves the question how - and why - the deer are wandering far onto the ice but then failing to get off it again

Possibly there was a snow cover on the ice which the deer could grip but then this melted. But why wander somewhere so exposed, specially with leopards around?
