'Kolchak was 'like an Englishman'-the analogy oddly recurs in an official Soviet account of the execution'

How do men impress women in the planet's coldest city? Easy - with the coolest dance in the world

By The Siberian Times reporter
13 March 2013

Male students from a dormitory block in Yakutsk, in north eastern Siberia, wanted to do something special to mark International Women's Day

'We wanted to say thank you' - their dance has become an instant internet hit in Russia. Picture: The Siberian Times

Undeterred by bone-freezing temperatures of minus 30C (a little mild for the time of year here in the Republic of Sakha), they plotted this amazing ice dance in crisp white shirts, ties and dark trousers.

They needed it to be good. Several weeks earlier, the female students in their dorm, Number 17 at the North-Eastern Federal University, had pushed to boat out on a day when Russian men are traditionally congratulated by women.

'The girls that live in our dormitory made us a fantastic present on 23 February', said Stepan Pavlov, 20, chairman of the dormitory students' committee.

'They cooked us a great meal, sang and even danced for us. We wanted to make sure that our 8 March present was at least no worse than they did for us.

'We wanted to say thank you.

'We sat down at night, and the idea came to us of taking the music of the 'Aital' group in Yakutsk and filming a video.

'It took us four days to film it...and yes we must admit we got very cold filming it.

'But then our beautiful girls deserved it!

'They were very pleased with our video - and said we should upload it online so that others can see it and get some smiles and warm emotions. I can't say we became stars, but we've certainly got people coming to say hello on the streets and smiling at us'.

In fact, the video has become an instant internet hit in Sakha - also known as Yakutia, the largest region in Russia, famed for its diamonds. And it is spreading rapidly.

'It was a great experience, we are happy that others can enjoy our dance as well', said Stepan.

Watch them dancing at -30C!

That is so kind of them!
And so kind of the girls.
It is dangerous, hopping in front of trucks like that!
The entire thing was like a Siberian 'Gangnam Style' thing.
Hmm, if they have so much energy, they all should learn 'Lezginka'- It is a nice conversation between boys and girls in dance.
