Siberia was picked out as a key growth area by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as the Asia country copes with a possible drop in numbers coming from Eurozone countries due to financial woes.

'The euro crisis has hit spending by middle- and low-income European tourists, so we must prepare to shift our focus to the high-end segment. Potential markets are Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States including Russia," said Juthaporn Rerngronasa, deputy governor for international marketing in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas.

She picked out Siberia as one of three particular places looking especially optimistic for tourism to Thailand, the others being Switzerland and Manchester in England.

'Charter flights will be promoted more aggressively to increase traffic, especially the routes....from some parts of Russia such as Siberia,' reported the Thai News Service.

There will be a strong accent on promoting Thailand to Siberians during the Russian winter, it was stated.

To promote tourism among new travellers, especially younger people, TAT in July  introduced "Lifestyle Thailand'', a smart-phone application. It is an easy way to access discounts from 300 selected accommodation providers across the country.

At the recent Travel Awards Association of Tour Operators of Russia,  the Moscow office of the Tourism Office of Thailand won the award for the best 'Active cooperation with travel community of Russia'.

'The Siberian Times' has previously highlighted the attractions of Pattaya to visitors from Siberia - not only those on short holidays but staying longer term.

Many Russians now see Thailand as an ideal place for a retirement home, or to obtain an English-language schooling for their children in a cosmopolitan environment.
