Welder Vadim Maslyakov, 28, is a sculptor in his spare time, making giant robots from car parts and other scrap metal. His striking creations are attracting public attention and will soon be exhibited in the city. A graduate of Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the married father-of-one wanted a new outlet for his welding skills.

He plans to switch from transformer robots to dinosaurs, encouraged by the reaction of people to his giant works. 'I gathered pictures of 'home-made' robots from other cities and countries and thought - why not to try and do it for myself?' he said.

'We have a car service station nearby and they gave me parts for free. I made the first one and people liked it, praised me. I was inspired with this and thought I need to do something more serious. The next was a scorpion, weighing more than one ton.'

His basement of the latest as yet unfinished robotic monster weighs some three tons, with the sculpture itself weighing 2.5 tons.

'Its legs are very heavy. We have specially selected details for them - crankshaft, heavy gears and I tried to make the top lighter,' he said. 'When I finish this robot I will start with my Tyrannosaurus. Now I'm drawing and calculating the construction. I pay a lot of attention to safety. How to design it so it won't fall, will withstand wind, loads, and snow. We know for sure that kids will climb on it.

'Men who come here on business look at the robot and forget about their work. They can stroll around it for 20 minutes, looking at it. They are like kids, these adult men, going closer, their mouths open, and inspecting it.'

He gives the robots a 'slightly aggressive' look. 'They draw attention,' he said. 'Families come to take pictures near the sculptures. Sometimes they take a photo of their child with the robot first, then mom comes over and says: 'Now take me with it!'

He said: 'I love to decorate the streets with my sculptures, make the passersby smile. Maybe kids will look at them and it will inspire them to go and learn to do something like this. It would be great to put such a sculpture at some youth technical centre. Maybe not everyone like them, but even if  0.001% is interested - that's good.

He works alongside another welder. 'All this is done in my spare time.' Vadim is already planning his tyrannosaurus, which he hopes will be the start of a scrap metal Jurassic Park, if he can find new sources of scrap metal.

'This dinosaur will be twice bigger in volume. It will have a long tail, and the head will turn. It's muzzle will stare at the spectator. I want the head to be on hinges, to move, with a rope so it can be pulled to turn the head. Imagine how children will be interested. How they will pull it.'

Now, if he can just get it to transform into a yellow Camaro... that would really be neat!
