The brown bear brazenly walked into a remote forest cabin, and helped itself to the man's bag plus two guns, say police.

The animal turned the tables on the 57 year old hunter when he went to a nearby river to get water deep in Irkutsk region.

'On November 16 he was hunting miles away from the nearest village and decided to stay at a forest cabin,' said a statement from the local interior ministry.

'He left his belongings in the cabin and went to get some water. On his return, he heard some suspicious sounds and spotted a bear.

Scratches

'To avoid an encounter with the animal, the hunter scurried off into the woods where he hid for several hours.'

When he returned to the remote cabin, his bag and two guns were missing.

The hunter went to look for his weapons in the taiga for several days but returned empty-handed.

This then prompted him to contact the police.

The beast is in possession of a Vepr carbine and IZH shotgun, pictured here, according to police.

Crime scene pictures show the bear left its tooth marks on a bucket and scratched some logs.

It is unclear if the man was hunting bears but the season is still open until 30 November.

By now, many bears are hibernating for the winter.

Other animals that can be hunted in Irkutsk region are moose, deer, boar, ducks, hare, fox, wolf, sable, and mink.

All they have to do is call the cops when the bear stops in
for ammo.

The IZH shotgun (top) and Vepr are properly identified in the above photo. Both photos are stock photos taken from the internet. Now, better defined, the shotgun, with sling, in the top photo is a Baikal IZH-43 Russian 12-gauge Double, Side-by-Side Shotgun. The Vepr pictured is not a carbine or rifle, which would normally be chambered for 7.62x39 or 7.62x54r, but is a Molot Vep-12, 12-gauge shotgun, which the Siberian Times reporter mistook to represent the hunter's stolen rifle. The rifle and shotgun appear similar, but the shotgun has a larger magazine and larger diameter barrel.

As Роберт Р. says, here comes a Russian Bears "Bear"ing Arms comment...:-). Given that I love the intelligence of nature, I think this is one smart Bear that he and/or she knows exactly what they are doing. Based on Sergey's comments, perhaps the Bears are protecting the Human "Hunters" from themselves. Thank you for also sharing the very beautiful picture at the end of the article. In Canada & the US we have Grizzly Bears with a distinct hump between the shoulder blades. It is likely the angle of the photo but I am just curious if there are different species of Russian Brown Bears?

Too many men in Russia go out "hunting" not for food or even trophies, but just as a social activity with friends, for fun, get together, drink lots of vodka out there, a vacation away from the wife and the children. Too many get really drunk, and then accidents happen, when you combine vodka and guns, you know; sometimes deliberate violence happens, men have their disputes and such; and, sometimes, bears happen too lol Sometimes, in Russia, you hunt the bear, but, sometimes, it hunts you too :)
