The road bridge collapse was in Svobodny, Amur region, a town 7,800 kilometres east of Moscow on the Trans-Siberian line.

A lucky pedestrian on the bridge was unharmed since the part of the viaduct he was walking on did not collapse.

A rail worker Nikolay Vladislavovich, 45, had an even narrower escape - and is seen running from the crashing debris.

‘Today is his second birthday,’ said a colleague.

He was given a day off to recover.

Acting mayor Vladimir Konstantinov declared a state of emergency in the town.

There was disruption to freight traffic on the Trans-Siberian Line in the Russian Far East.

Passenger trains were reported to be running normally.

The world's longest rail line connects Moscow to the country’s Pacific coast.

Officials initially blamed the collapse on the truck being ‘overloaded’ with sand.

A lucky pedestrian on the bridge was unharmed and a rail worker Nikolay Vladislavovich, 45, had an even narrower escape.

However, investigations are underway into whether - as is suspected -  there was a fault in the structure.

The rest of the bridge is to be removed and rebuilt.

Special measures were underway to ensure children could return from school.

The bridge was the only crossing point between the two sides of the town.

This is ridiculous. A truck, really? The next bridge will collapse and you will blame a pedestrian? Bridges are built to withhold such weight. I believe there was no maintenance that lead to such outcome than a silly truck with sand.

a heavy truck? the KAMAZ, full of gravel or sand it seems, looks indeed heavy. But a bridge should be able to handle that. I am sure these trucks passed over the bridge, not for the first time. or the first day. to me, it looks like more neglect. The bridge was built, what, 50 years ago. and that was it. no service, no repairs, no nothing. not the first time this happens. And not only in Russia.
