A 52 year old man fired at the gym of the kindergarten in Salavat from his apartment overlooking the school.  His motive was unclear.

The children all fled unscathed, but a teacher was wounded from flying glass caused by one of six bullets which struck the building.

The gunman, firing a hunting rifle, died after police surrounded his flat and he refused to surrender and shot at officers as they stormed his flat.

Initial reports said he was killed by return fire from police but later it was stated that he took his own life.

Teachers acted immediately to lead their two-to-seven years olds to safety. Salavat is some 1500km from Moscow in the Republic of Bashkortostan.
