The attack came in the village of Kheta on the Taimyr peninsula in northern Siberia, some 1,747 kilometres north of the regional capital Krasnoyarsk.

The twins were playing on a helicopter pad when the bear appeared. The little girl ran away and called for help as her twin brother was pulled away into bushes.

Olga Degid, Russian Investigative Committee representative, said: 'Children were playing outside when a brown bear walked towards them, grabbed a six year old boy and killed him.'

Locals killed the bear several hours after the attack, she said.

The Investigative Committee is carrying out a check on this incident.

Growing up at Siberian latitude, me and my sister were taught to shoot rifles at Bears, but the recoil was so hard it would knock us off our feet, still we were trained because the Bears would come right into camp and into town.

I'm very sorry to hear this. But the boy was heroic in saving his sister. The boy stood up to the Bear as he let his sister run for the town. There should be a sculpture for the boy as a hero. I grew up around Bears above 60 degree latitude, up North. They used to track me in October early snows. I would see their fresh footprints. I wish these kids had a rifle, but even at age six the recoil is too much maybe. My regards to the parents and surviving sister, may they not be too heartbroken in the coming years ahead.

Expect more of this as the bears have less to feed on.
