A Siberian daredevil has defied the odds by setting himself on fire then leaping from a nine-story building on to the ground - and surviving.

Alexander Chernikov, 23, from Barnaul in Altai Krai, used nothing but a large snowdrift to break his fall and miraculously walked away without a single injury.

His death-defying leap of faith was heralded by a large group of friends, and journalists, who had gathered at the bottom of the residential building in Novoaltaysk.

But it failed to impress the authorities, who promptly dragged him out of the snow and arrested him, and it is likely he will face charges.

Alexander, who wants to become a professional stuntman, said: 'I was planning to jump a little bit differently but, as usual, at the crucial moment obstacles arose.

'I was nervous and in a hurry, as the police were looking for me everywhere. I was afraid that they would prevent me making my 'burning flight'. So I immediately got on the edge, set myself on fire to be more resolute and epic, took aim at the pile of snow and flew.

'I do not remember the flight itself. I only remember a terrible pain in my abdomen and chest - it seemed like I was hit by a truck. But five minutes later I came to my senses. I am pleased with myself and my jump. I did what I wanted, but do not copy me. This is very dangerous.'

The incredible leap was Alexander's biggest challenge so far, having jumped off a smaller five-storey building last year, and also being promptly arrested. Most impressive, or dangerous, was the fact he used nothing but a large snowdrift that had taken four hours to build and harden to break his fall.

Jumping head first, he landed on his back, extinguishing the flames.

He said: 'After the jump I was taken to hospital where the doctors were shocked. In the ambulance I was just shaking. I was very nervous and it was terribly cold. My blood pressure jumped to 180 and 120, I smelled gasoline, and I was in burnt clothes.

'But after the examination, it turned out that everything was in order and that all my bones, muscles, ligaments, internal organs were intact.'

Alexander has a keen interest in stunts and has spent years studying the art and staging a number of different tricks. Describing himself as a founder of a new extreme movement called DCA, for Domination, Courage, Adrenaline, he harbours hopes of becoming a stuntman.

As well as setting himself on fire and leaping off the five-storey building in Barnaul last year, earlier this year he also jumped in front of a freight train travelling at full speed.

He said: 'I declare to the world: human possibilities are endless. We just need to be able to open them in ourselves.

'I am doing this by studying a 'secret science' and making myself a Superman. I had 100 per cent confidence in myself.  My mental attitude and my strong and powerful body saved me from death.'

But, with a smile, he added: 'My parents love me, but do not like what I do. I did not tell them about the last jump from the nine-storey building, so as to not worry them. I'm the only child in my family.'

Stubborn and stupid, is a bad combination. Usually, the way stupid people, make their contribution to the gene pool, is by removing themselves from it.
