Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways has chosen a major Siberian airport as one of its approved locations to use in the event of any in-flight emergencies over Russia.

A delegation of technical experts toured Tolmachevo Airport in Novosibirsk and confirmed their intention to use it for any flights developing problems between Japan and Europe.

The group discussed details of ground support for aircraft, including the resolution of maintenance issues, and what was available in the event of any unscheduled landings.

Not every airport in the world is able to cope with the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which ANA operates. But after the visit the Japanese delegation said the airport met with the standards they were looking for and said they would approve Novosibirsk for use in sudden diversions.

ANA flies a number of international routes over Russian airspace, including to the United Kingdom and Germany.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: 'When pilots plan their flights, they need to include one or two alternate airports, where they can land in case of an emergency.

'Of course in theory they can ask for landing in every airport which can take them, but it is not as easy as it seems. The airport need to meet the technical standards, have the proper infrastructure, like big terminals, and hotels for passengers, trained technicians and so on.

'Besides, not every airfield can accept the Dreamliner as it is a rather big aircraft and there are special conditions it needs to land and take off. Now ANA will put Tolmachevo in their flight plans, because they know they can get here all the required assistance.'

Meanwhile the Novaya Kolkhida company owned by tycoon Roman Trotsenko has become the biggest shareholder of the JSC Perm International Airport, in the Urals. The firm won the tender for the purchase of 75 per cent of the facility at a price of 1.5billion roubles, staggered over three stages until December 1, 2017.

The main task facing the owners will be to build to new passenger terminal before 2017, when the last of the shares will be transferred into Novaya Kolhida’s ownership.

Roman Trotsenko is no stranger to running airports, and is already co-owner of the company Novaport which has an 85 per cent share in Tolmachevo, in Novosibirsk. Three years ago Novaport started work in the reconstruction of the international terminal at Tolmachevo, with the project set to be completed in May.
