Walruses brutally slaughtered for 'impotency cure'

The walruses were shot then beheaded, suggesting they were also killed for their tusks. The bulucums of the Pacific creatures had been extracted - penile bones which are used as an amulet to boost potency. Tusks can be used for carving.

Local police did not find any criminal action in the incident, it was reported. Nevertheless a criminal investigation was opened by prosecutors in Chukotka, the most easterly region of Russia.
A rookery of some 400 walruses is at Cape Gytrytkyn, to the east of the site of the slaughter.

The value of the damage was put at 400,000 roubles, around $6,000.
