A massive rescue operation, divers and helicopters saved most of the zoo's animals after treacherous floods engulfed their cages. Two bears, a wolf and a badger were killed after the typhoon led to waters from the Rakovka River surging over the grounds of Green Island animal park.

Now 13 bears and a lion called Grey have taken up residence at their new homes in an enclosure in a city park.

The head of the Far Eastern Regional Emergency Centre, Alexander Solovyov, said that the evacuation in September was 'one of the most complex and unusual' carried out by the Emergencies Ministry. 'We involved divers and aviation,' he said.

The deaths of the animals - including a bear called Masyanya - could have been avoided if the former management of the zoo had taken greater care over the safety of their animals, he said.

The bears scouted their now home, and dragged straw into their den. The animals were held in temporary accommodation before being moved to their new home.

It is sad some died when could have been saved following proper zoo management emergency practices. The heroic effort of rescuers avoided certain disaster. Now, give these animals larger, safer enclosures. Lessons learned for the future.

hopefully the new =Zoo= will have MUCH bigger and more comfortable enclosures for the animals. and the previous =management= should be banned from there.
