His teachers and medics are puzzled how the accident happened. But surgeon Elena Nekrasova said: 'The metal handle was 10x2 centimetres. We needed to save the boy.

'Our experts quickly conducted minimally invasive surgery on the chest, and gently got out the door handle. Speedy decision-making and the absence of injuries to his internal organs - the lungs and heart - saved the boy's life.'

The boy was taken to Regional Children's Hospital Number 1 where x-rays found the alien object.

A teacher said: 'We do not understand how the handle could break like this. The most amazing thing is that Slava did not lose consciousness. With a handle in his chest he came to the school medical room. Unfortunately, there were no doctors at the time. A teacher saw the blood and called an ambulance.'

Slava is now recovering. He said he played with a friend who slammed shut the classroom door causing Slava - full name Vyacheslav - to run into the handle, which broke off and wedged into his chest.
