He has been in touch with the rescue services by mobile phone in appalling weather in Russia's pacific capital.

The man is on the iced-over sea but he cannot see flares fired by rescuers, and it is unclear how long his battery will last.

He got lost while walking on the ice close to Skrebtsov Island.

Dozens are involved in the search but there was no news of the lost man, who has not been named.

The flares were intended to help the stranded man understand which direction to walk to the shore - but he reported by mobile phone that he could not see them.

By midnight on Tuesday in Vladivostok, he had been missing for around 26 hours.
