Animal cruelty campaigners may have other views, but locals claim the sturgeon in its cramped aquarium at Lenta supermarket is dancing to save its life.

A video of its dances has made splash on the web. The author said: 'This poor guy lives in an aquarium in one of the big supermarkets in Novokuznetsk. Filmed by myself, but I did not buy it.'

'This poor guy lives in an aquarium in one of the big supermarkets in Novokuznetsk. Filmed by myself, but I did not buy it.'

'It was a suicide attempt,' said one comment. 'Or an escape bid,' wrote another. Among the comments were demands that the sturgeon should be bought - and kept alive.

The cost is 1,419 roubles per kilogram, which means the price of this animal would be about $63.
