We both know how to growl: the bear that thinks it's a dog

Stray dog leads his friend around the forest tracks near Surgut.

The stray was keen to play in the snow and tried to get the bear to join in. Picture here and below: Sergei Tretyakov

This unusual scene was caught on camera close to a tourist complex on the highway from Nefteyugansk-Surgut in western Siberia.

The dog is plainly the leader in this odd couple friendship, leading the bear on a rough track covered in snow.

The stray was keen to play in the snow and tried to get the bear to join in. It is not the only sighting of the pair.

Local resident Larisa Malova said the dog made its home in an abandoned car near Yuzhny, a settlement of summer cottages.

The dog is plainly the leader in this odd couple friendship, leading the bear on a rough track covered in snow.

'This car is next to my house, and I began to feed the little dog,' she said. 'At first it  was angry, but then mellowed, even licking my hand.

'Once, at about 5 am I heard it barking, looked out the window - there was a bear.

'I thought it would kill the unfortunate dog, ran to call 112 [the emergency services number].'

The police came but by then the bear and the dog had disappeared together into the forest.

I am curious as well as to what the dog is carrying. Thanks for asking that question Penelope. I hope both friends have long, healthy and happy lives. They both seem well fed so thank you to the people who are taking care of them. I hope the village is able to "adopt" them both. The dog almost seems to be trying to show the bear where he can find food?
