The nurses are both from the city of Birobidzhan, capital of the Jewish Autonomous Region in the Far East of Russia. Both are reported to have children.

Director of the Birobidzhan hospital's administration, Vitaly Krasovsky, said: 'Two medical nurses from a military hospital in the city of Birobidzhan were killed.'

Gorod on Bira news website reported earlier today: 'As we were told by staff at the Birobidzhan Military hospital, both Nadezhda and Galina served there as  nurses. 'The chief of the hospital left to Moscow to collect their bodies.'

The nurses had flown to Syria on 30 November. The nurses were said to be around 40 years old.

Militants attacked a Russian mobile military hospital in Aleppo on 5 December. A Russian female military medic was killed when a mine fired by militants directly hit the hospital's reception.

Another two medics were injured, and one of them subsequently died from her injuries. 'The Russian and Syrian doctors tried their best to save her,' said Major General Igor Konashenkov.

Another Russian, a pediatrician, remains in critical condition.

Konashenkov urged international organisations such as the Red Cross to condemn the attack on the health workers 'who were doing their medical duty to help the civilians of Aleppo'.

Some local residents who came to the hospital were also injured.
