The Amur tiger - shown here in video footage - is aged around 6 months, but cannot survive yet on its own in the wild.

If rangers remove it from the wild, however, the endangered animal will never be able to return to its natural habitat because it will never get the chance to learn to hunt and survive.

They hope the mother will come back to claim her offspring, but after two weeks this looks less likely.

'We do not disclose the name of the village where th tiger was spotted, as our experts fear that poachers will rush there,' said a spokesman for the regional Hunting and Wildlife Department.

The village is believed to be some 250 km from Vladivostok.

Meanwhile an adult tiger has been spotted and filmed close to a populated area but some 115 km east of the region's main city, close to Anisimovka village, but it is not believed to be the missing mother.

A driver spotted the animal on the forest road, but it is believed to be a male. The tiger was walking, and showed no fright at the car or the man. Nor did it show aggression.

A comment with the video read:  'Large adult tiger is not afraid of cars and wandering along the road.'
