The disturbing incident caught on camera has left the woman with serious head injuries, say local reports.

The victim has been nicknamed Anna Karenina on social media, says Baikal Daily website, but it is unclear why she only seemed to flinch from the oncoming tram at the last minute.

There is also surprise that the driver did not slow sooner.

'According to our data, the emergency braking was applied. However, the braking distance of the tram is 20 metres.'

Footage was filmed from inside the tram and the accident was on 10 March at Boevaya Street in Ulan-Ude, capital of Buryatia republic. Yuri Sanzhanov, Ulan-Ude's tram boss, said: 'The driver of a tram did not expect to see a pedestrian on this section of the track.

'According to our data, the emergency braking was applied. However, the braking distance of the tram is 20 metres.'

In the Leo Tolstoy classic, heroine Anna Karenina takes her own life by throwing herself under a passing train.

and one could safely assume with weather conditions like that, cold, wet rails, the brake distance would be even more. on the other hand, the tram driver has also to think of the passengers in the tram. maybe full of people, old people, people who maybe NOT hold on to the handrails or handholds as we are reminded all the time. during an emergency brake people inside the tram will be for sure also prone to fall and incur injuries. i just hope the enquiry will be fair and just. and the tram driver will be not seen at fault. whatever the outcome, the driver will be traumatized enough.
