Future ship mechanical engineer Alexey, 21, lives in the village of Stankevichi in the Nazyvayevskiy district of Omsk region, along with 39 fellow residents.

On 9 November, Omsk Institute of Water Transport, which Alexey attends, switched to online studies due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now joining his teachers on Zoom for Alexey means walking about 300 metres from the village, climbing eight metre up a birch tree and listening to lectures from near the tree top.

Temperatures are nudging below zero now in his region. Today it was minus 5C.

‘My only way to get in touch with teachers via Zoom is to climb up a birch tree,’ Alexey said.

‘It was fine earlier in the summer, but it’s getting quite cold now. I’ve got to pay with my health, and I’ve already suffered double pneumonia.’

After several days of tree top lectures, Alexey recorded a video appeal to Omsk region governor Alexander Burkov, asking education officials to help him.

He shared his plea on Instagram and TikTok.

The TikTok version has been watched more than one million times, and was picked up by local and federal Russian media, pushing the bureaucrats to respond.

‘We will definitely help Alexey,’ said the regional education ministry.

It was unclear this would mean a better internet signal in his village, some 200 km from Omsk city.

But they promised to ‘draw up an individual study plan for him for the period of distant learning’.
