'The explosion occurred at the Dzerzhinsky Mine in Prokopyevsk,' said an Emergencies' Ministry spokesman. Earlier there were reports of 15 stuck below ground. Later it was clarified three are missing with one dead.

The pit is 3,482 kilometres (2,164 miles) east of Moscow in Siberia's well-known Kuzbass coalmining area.

'Each mine employee has a motion sensor,' said an official. 'Of the 105 persons who were down at the time of the incident, 104 have their sensors working.

'According to preliminary information, one person's sensor was not working.'

A crisis management committee has been set up headed by Kemerovo Region Governor Aman Tuleyev.
