One dead, three missing at coal mine in Siberia

A methane explosion ripped through the pit in Kemerovo region - but 101 safely escaped to the surface.

'The explosion occurred at the Dzerzhinsky Mine in Prokopyevsk,' said an Emergencies' Ministry spokesman. Earlier there were reports of 15 stuck below ground. Later it was clarified three are missing with one dead. 

The pit is 3,482 kilometres (2,164 miles) east of Moscow in Siberia's well-known Kuzbass coalmining area. 

'Each mine employee has a motion sensor,' said an official. 'Of the 105 persons who were down at the time of the incident, 104 have their sensors working. 

'According to preliminary information, one person's sensor was not working.'

A crisis management committee has been set up headed by Kemerovo Region Governor Aman Tuleyev.
