The plan is a key plank in Thailand’s aim of reinvigorating its tourism industry
The so-called Phuket Sandbox initiative is due to start on 1 July. Its first wave is aimed at tourists from Russia along with the UK, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the US, said Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.
Vaccinated tourists will not have to go into isolation or quarantine on arrival, if they can show proof they are not infected with coronavirus.
But they will only be permitted to vacation in Phuket for the first two weeks of their trip.
If they remain clear of Covid-19 after this time, then they will be able to move to other parts of Thailand subject to any provincial restrictions.
‘If this project is a success, we will expand it to other areas,’ said the minister.
