A blood-splattered knife was found beside the corpse and a three page handwritten note discarded in the bathroom bin on the island of Phuket. The man's identity has not been given as yet.

Some Russian sources named him as Fyodor Vasilyev, aged 32. The man saw a ladyboy 'several' times in the hotel, where he was staying on holiday, it is believed.

'His room had a 'Do not disturb' sign hanging from his door knob since yesterday,' police major Teerasak Boonsang  told the Phuket Gazette. 'When we entered the room, we found him dead on the bed with a long, deep cut running from his wrist up his forearm, as well as seven stab wounds to his chest.

'We are now searching for the ladyboy, checking CCTV, translating the letters and continuing to question hotel staff.'

Later officers said they had found the ladyboy who was ruled out as a suspect, adding that police were reviewing whether the case might be murder.

Friends of the victim said he checked into the hotel on 19 July and was due to check out 13 August to fly back to Russia.

'We gathered in front of the hotel this morning to take the shuttle bus and when he didn't show up, we asked hotel staff to check his room,' said one.

A member of the hotel staff said: 'The last time we saw him was at breakfast on Monday (August 11) and there has been a 'Do not disturb' sign on the door since yesterday'.

Police are still collecting evidence, and have been in touch with the Russian Embassy to discuss the case.
