By The Siberian Times reporter
21 February 2018

Loggers disturbed the hibernating black bears in a tree hollow, shooting the mother.

The orphaned cub was delivered to the porch of an animal rehabilitation centre in a plastic bag.

The helpless creature weighs 2.4 kg, normal for its age.

Russia has the most northerly population of black bears, adapted to exist in extreme conditions.

Due to the reduction of habitats and intensive deforestation, the fate of these animals is alarming.

This species is included in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is under threat of extinction.

Every year, as a result of hunting in dens and logging in the Far East of Russia, between 20 and 40 black bear cubs are orphaned.

Animals are not safe even in their own habitat. Poaching is a major threat to a number of species around the world. Governments need to up the ante to protect them at all costs, even if it means shooting poachers on site!

Please Russian government stop hunting Russian lands to save these critically endangered animals.
