Russian security council secretary Nikolai Patrushev - seen as close to Vladimir Putin - held top level talks in Bangkok meeting prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The parties agreed to step up the exchange of information between their intelligence agencies in opposing international terrorism, including through cutting off its financing.

Patrushev also discussed the security of Russian tourists in Thailand with his counterpart, Wanlop Rugsanaoh, said reports.

Many Russian tourists visiting Thailand are from Siberia and the Pacific rim of Russia.

The Thai premier  urged Russia to consider purchasing Thai goods, especially food and agricultural products, while expressing interest in Russia's high-technology products.

‘Prayut Chan-o-cha and Nikolai Patrushev expressed satisfaction with the efficiency of interaction between the two countries in fighting transnational crime and illegal drug trafficking,’ according to a Russian statement.

The officials ‘discussed various aspects of Russian-Thai relations, paying special attention to interaction in strengthening international and regional security’.

They agreed that relations should be based on ‘mutual respect and confidence and similarity of views on multiple international and regional issues’.

‘They also addressed the issue of improving the efficiency of Russian-Thai trade and economic cooperation - and expressed interest in continuing to develop the tourist industry and ensuring the security of Russian tourists in Thailand,’ said the statement.
