Two fatal accidents blight Orthodox Christmas Day in Siberia

A rock fall led to a 21 year old being trapped underground at the Prokopyevskaya 7 coal mine. He was with seven other miners who escaped safely to the surface.

'One person was trapped by falling rocks. He was promptly pulled out. Unfortunately, he was already dead,' said a rescue service spokesman. 

The owner, Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), refused to comment pending an investigation. Kemerovo region governor Aman Tuleyev urged owners and managers of coal companies to check safety conditions at their mines across Kemerovo, Russia's premier coal mining region. 

A special commission has been set up to investigate the accident. 

Meanwhile at Essel village, Evenkia district in Krasnoyarsk region, two died when a blast ripped through a fuel and lubricants storage facility. 

'The fire that followed the blast destroyed two petrol tankers,' said one source. Police blamed the flouting of safety rules. An investigation is now underway.

you keep hearing about tragedies like this one happening, and nothing seems to change much; each time I look at a picture of miner it brings a thought of a modern day slavery
