The game was in doubt until the last minute due to unseasonably warm weather which raised questions over the safety of the ice.

'I've never had to play on ice like this,' said Kamensky, a 1997 Stanley Cup winner with the Colorado Avalanche and 1988 Olympic gold medalist.

The aim was to promote the amateur Night Hockey League in Russia.

Baikal contains around 20 per cent of the world's unfrozen fresh water and is 1,640 metres deep at its maximum.

The game was between Russian hockey veterans and an amateur team from Eastern Siberia.

The game was close to the lake resort of Listvyanka, where the depth is more than one kilometre. Another aim of the project was to 'promote this unique natural region in the areas of tourism and recreation among public and the business community'.

would have loved to watch. we used to play on frozen lakes a lot. it's much more work to clear the snow but then more fun. However, I don't think those players had to prepare the ice field by themselves ;-)
