The new passenger terminal will be financed, built and operated by Regional Airports Management Company, part of Renova. Meanwhile, cargo facilities will be managed by Interros subsidiary Interport Management Company.

The terminal will cover 40,000 square metres and handle 2.25 million passengers per year.

Costing on the project was put at around $182 million. Completion is due in less than three years.

'We hope that the airport will soon get a major push toward further development. We already have the plans, drafted by Hochtief, our old partner, so we will begin construction of the terminal in the near future,' said Vekselberg.

The airport is already the key hub for NordStar Airlines, there are suggestions it can become a major base in the east of Russia for UTair.

The airport has healthy growth figures, with passenger traffic up 16%  in 2012 to 1.9 million.

International flights saw a 131% growth in January with Thailand proving a popular destination.
