The disturbing images are from an river close to Norilsk, in Kransnoyarsk region. Locals say it is far from the first time the waters have turned bright red. The river is said to be polluted by a discharge from Nadezhdinsky factory, also known as Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant, which processes nickel concentrate.

It is owned by giant Norilsk Nickel, but the company has questioned claims about a discharge, but said checks are underway.

A spokesman said that 'as of today, the Polar Division of Norilsk Nickel does not confirm a leak of emergency discharge of industrial waste into the Daldykan River which could have affected its state.

'However, environmental monitoring around the river and adjoined production facilities of the company is being held, including helicopter flights.'

As a precaution, production at the facility was reduced. The company provided a picture of the river to a local news agency, Tayga Info, which showed the waters with a normal colour.

However, it was not clear if the picture showed the same stretch of river. 'As far as we know, the colour of the river is today no different from normal,' said a company source.

Nickel bloom (Annabergite) may be pink. Perhaps they had too much of this & couldn't process it properly. Obviously a major mistake- glad I'm not there as I am allergic to nickel!

I agree with everyone's comments and thank you for raising awareness of this event. Mining waste is highly toxic is my understanding and denial and corruption run rampant all over the world, If we all keep raising our voices, we will make a dent each time in the wall of greed and obstructionism. It is frustratingly slow I realize, and harm is so hard to watch being done but please keep reporting, posting, blogging, commenting, signing petitions, protesting and thank you to everyone who is taking every action we can.

That factory above looks like it's out of the 1800's. Was the Czar the original owner? Tear it down, My God!! and that statement about them not being able to verify a leak?? Of course it wasn't a lleak. Leaks are accidental. This was a discharge and should be illegal.

Deny, deny, deny... Deny even the most evident. That's like from the Soviet Union era. Now we are living the 21st century and it's time to update the attitudes!

This must be looked in to immediately : What has happened to cause this? Is the waster toxic? Does it harm life? Companies should pay and rectify any damage caused
