The truck crane was lowering a boat into the Lena River from a wharf in Ust-Kut - but suddenly it all went wrong.
The vessel was too heavy for the crane and suddenly its wheels lifted off the ground on the quayside as it toppled.
The driver of the crane made an effort to reverse to keep the balance - then he jumped clear.
Reports said there were no injuries, except perhaps to pride.
Workers tried and failed to pull the jib out.
They fixed it with ropes and left until heavier machinery arrived to Ust-Kut in Irkutsk region.
Archeologists discovered a new stone bracelet, two sharp pins, a marble ring and fox tooth pendants.
