The world famous institute has been working on an Ebola vaccine to fulfil an order from the Russian government. Now - although the permission for clinical trials is still awaited from the Health Ministry - volunteers are being sought to test the vaccine.

Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, a regulatory body responsible for rights protection and human well-being, said: 'We are preparing our volunteers, create a team - a few hundred - so we are ready to start the trials immediately after we get the permission.'

An initial trail on 60 humans was deemed a success. Those agreeing to new and larger test for the vaccine are told it is 'lifeless' and will not impact on their health.

It is considered different to other Ebola vaccines but is also 'lifeless': it does not contain any live viruses.

Deputy head physician at Vector, Natalia Ryndyuk, said: 'The first phase of clinical trials has already passed....and the safety of the vaccine has been proved.

'Now, in a second step, the task is to prove how effective it is, if it can cause in humans the production of immune bodies, which then will defend the real virus.

'To do this, we conduct a huge number of immunological tests. The level of protection which we will find in volunteers show us how the vaccine will protect people from this infection.'

Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, and often fatal illness in humans, say experts. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.
