Now two NEW large holes appear in Siberia

The funnel is a perfectly formed cone, say locals who are mystified at how it was formed. Its depth is estimated at between 60 and 100 metres and its diameter - more than four metres. Picture: Local residents

Millions of people around the world glimpsed the first giant hole after it was revealed by The Siberian Times here and on The Siberian Times TV here.

Now news has emerged of two new similar formations in the permafrost, prompting more intrigue about their creation.

Theories range from meteorites, stray missiles, a man-made prank, and aliens, to an explosive cocktail of methane or shale gas suddenly exploding. The version about melting permafrost due to climate change, causing a release of methane gas, which then forces an eruption is the current favorite, though scientists are reluctant to offer a firm conclusion without more study.

The second is in the Yamal Peninsula - known to locals as 'the end of the world' - like the first. It is some hundreds kilometres from the first, which is close to a huge gas extraction plant at Bovanenkovo. This new crater in the Taz district, near the village of Antipayuta, has a diameter of about 15 metres.

A deputy of the regional parliament - or duma - Mikhail Lapsui has examined this latest phenomenon.

'I flew by helicopter to inspect this funnel on Saturday 19 July,' he said. 'Its diameter is about 15 meters. 'There is also ground outside, as if it was thrown as a result of an underground explosion.

'According to local residents, the hole formed on 27 September 2013. Observers give several versions. According to the first, initially at the place was smoking, and then there was a bright flash. In the second version, a celestial body fell there.'

The Chief Scientist of the Earth Cryosphere Institute, Marina Leibman, told URA.RU website: 'I have heard about the second funnel on Yamal, in Taz district, and saw the pictures.

'Undoubtedly, we need to study all such formations. It is necessary to be able to predict their occurrence. Each new funnel provides additional information for scientists.'

The third crater and hole is in the Taymyr Peninsula, to the east of Yamal, in Kransoyark region. It was accidentally discovered by local herders, inhabitants of the northern village of Nosok.

The funnel is a perfectly formed cone, say locals who are mystified at how it was formed. Its depth is estimated at between 60 and 100 metres and its diameter - more than four metres.

The herders almost fell into the hole which lies on a pasturing route. They took pictures of the hole which were sent to scientists at the Norilsk Taimyr Explorers' Club.

Experts - geologists, ecologists, and historians - have not come to a consensus about the origin of the funnel, say reports in the region.

'It is not like this is the work of men, but also doesn't look like natural formation,' said one account.

Further study is planned of this hole.

The first hole is around 70 metres deep with an icy lake at its bottom.

Please see our reports on the first hole here and here.

The craters look like they were carved by a high speed gas jet such as occurs in diamond pipe formation. The sides are worn smooth by the ultra high speed gas jet.

my intuition tells me this isnt from an explosion. It is many thousands of years old and formed in deep porous gravels by a massive iceicle. Each thaw period the outer layer melts a little allowing water to surround it then expands or heaves when it freezes and over time the iceicle grows to displace the earth.

With global warming the temp differences become greater and so the heaving process untill a tipping point is reached and the whole thing melts completely leaving a cavity.

Note the terrain- the hole is centred in a shallow water course. The earth hasnt been thrown as it would in an explosion but has slid off a dome of melting ice to the sides.

We are in deep do do's with this global warming the like's of which most people cannot imagine.

can these just be vent holes like on the ocean floor? and to all the people blaming America for global warming take a look in your home and see where most of your products or their components come from and maybe buy less made in china......................

its to the poles and shifts at semeritry of planet releasing pressure by depression of gravity changing of polairtys affixing axel spin ratio" thru wobble transhions at increased signals rad to interferance changes Hence:fighting to stablize sun over rad to planet reflection at cycles connection signals of forces? should be all over the world holes everwhere?remember water is effected by the moon as waves?man is not the only one who moves great spans of water?you should know how to check this!

The great Russian permafrost expert Marina Leibman, who inspected the first hole, offers valuable insights in a video interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5fK3TT2GAQ&list=UUdeDjsgVdGBoqEuT2d70YbQ

An examination by 'experts' IS whats required, it'd be fascinating to get the facts. Was it formed by a falling object? but no real "impact" crater as you might expect, or an ejection from below - but where is all the material that was contained, where there is now a hole!? (there is some material around the surface, but I'd expect a lot more) A "sinkhole"? unlikely given the smooth surface of the sides, a sinkhole would be more irregular.! A Puzzle in need of an answer :) An Expert Examination should be able to determine how the sides of the hole was formed, heat? upward movement, downward plunge of an object - it'd be there at the bottom if it was an Impact!

Facinating! as long as it's not something hatching, I see them as a great resource for geologists to explore the strata. As for aliens taking core samples ... well if they meant to harm us we'd know about it but they should really cover their tracks better. What really concerns me is that reindeer herders have cameras.

In my humble, uneducated opinion.. global warming means the top is less cold, so the bottom can warm more from the earth's internal (geothermal) heat. Result: Permafrost thaw level is rising closer to the surface. More water moving underground causes cavities and collapse from beneath. Sometimes large amounts fall in, increasing the cavern's volume quickly. When the roof finally falls in you get a hole, and a gust of escaping air or gas that blows some of the dirt out. If gas is methane, could cause an explosion or fireball. These holes appear all round the world - Florida, Germany, Brazil recently in the news. How to predict? Ground-penetrating radar can find cavities.

Yamal Peninsula should not be "the end of the world", it should be "journey to the centre of the world".
